The legal and social position of Jews in the immediate postwar period differed considerably between rural and urban areas, depending on the decisions of their former neighbors who came to power in the settlements. The new communist government sought to reconcile Jewish responses to property redistribution and attempts to restore community life with non-Jewish reactions and attitudes.
